A blocked drain can start with something relatively minor, such as water taking longer than usual to disappear, but it can quickly develop into a much bigger problem. Bad smells, gurgling noises, overflowing drains and wastewater backing up into sinks, showers or toilets can all indicate that something is preventing water from flowing freely through your drainage system.

Some simple drain blockages can be cleared safely at home. Others may be deeper within the drainage system or caused by problems such as compacted debris, tree root intrusion or damaged pipework, where professional drainage equipment is required.

Drainage problems don't always begin with a completely blocked pipe. In many cases, you'll notice the drainage system gradually becoming less effective.

Toilets taking longer to empty after flushing

Water backing up through another fixture

Sewage or wastewater overflowing from a drain

One slow-draining sink may indicate a localised blockage close to that particular fixture. If several sinks, toilets or drains around the property are experiencing problems simultaneously, the obstruction may be further along the drainage system.

This distinction matters because a simple local blockage may be suitable for DIY treatment, whereas a deeper drainage blockage usually requires specialist equipment.

How Do You Know If a Drain Is Blocked?

          What Causes Blocked Drains?

There isn't one single cause of blocked drains. What is causing the obstruction often determines how it needs to be removed.

          Fat, Oil and Grease

Cooking fats and oils can enter a drain as liquids but cool and solidify inside the pipework. Over time, additional food waste and debris can stick to this material, gradually reducing the diameter of the pipe. Eventually, water may struggle to pass through at all.

Even relatively small amounts of food entering a kitchen sink can accumulate inside drainage pipes. Coffee grounds, rice, pasta and other food waste should generally be disposed of in the bin rather than washed down the sink.

          Food Waste

Bathroom drains commonly become blocked by a combination of hair, soap residue and other products. This material can accumulate around the waste pipe and gradually restrict the flow of water from baths, showers and bathroom sinks.

          Hair and Soap

          Wet Wipes and Sanitary Products

Toilet paper is designed to break down after flushing. Many other products aren't. Wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton buds and similar items can remain intact within the drainage system and contribute to significant blockages.

Outside drains are exposed to a completely different range of potential obstructions. Leaves, soil, mud and other garden debris can enter drainage channels and gullies and eventually prevent water from flowing properly. For a detailed walkthrough, see our guide to How to Unblock an Outside Drain.

Tree roots naturally seek sources of moisture and can enter drainage pipes through small cracks, damaged joints or other defects. Once inside, the roots can continue growing and trap waste passing through the pipe. Simply removing the immediate obstruction may therefore not solve the underlying problem.

How to Clear a Blocked Drain Yourself

The appropriate method depends on where the blockage is located and what's causing it. If the problem appears relatively minor, there are several things you can try before calling a drainage company.

          1. Remove Any Visible Debris

Start with the simplest explanation. If you can safely access the affected drain, check whether anything obvious is preventing water from escaping. For sinks and showers, this could be accumulated hair or debris around the plughole. Outside, leaves and other material may have accumulated around a drain cover or gully.

Always wear suitable protective gloves when handling material from a drain and avoid direct contact with wastewater.

          2. Try Hot Water

Hot water can sometimes help with relatively minor accumulations of soap or grease. However, this isn't a universal drain-unblocking method. A significant obstruction won't simply disappear because hot water has been poured onto it, and repeatedly pouring boiling water into certain types of pipework isn't something we'd recommend.

If water isn't draining at all, continually adding more water can also make the situation worse by increasing the amount that could potentially overflow.

          3. Use a Plunger

A plunger can be effective when the blockage is relatively close to the affected fixture. The plunger needs to form a good seal around the opening. Repeated plunging creates changes in pressure that may loosen or move the obstruction.

If the blockage clears, run water afterwards and check that it now drains normally. If the water remains slow or immediately backs up again, there may still be material restricting the pipe.

          4. Check Accessible Traps

If the problem is isolated to a single sink, the blockage may be within the trap beneath it. Food, grease, hair and other debris can accumulate here.

If you're comfortable removing the trap, place a container underneath first to catch any water and debris. Once cleaned, ensure everything is correctly refitted and check carefully for leaks. If you're unsure about dismantling plumbing, leave this step to somebody suitably experienced.

          5. Drain Rods

Drain rods can be used for some blockages within accessible drainage pipes. However, they need to be used correctly. Forcing rods through a drainage system without understanding the pipe layout can potentially cause problems, particularly where the drainage system is damaged or the obstruction is particularly stubborn.

If you've reached the point where significant force is required, it's usually sensible to stop. Professional drainage engineers have equipment capable of both locating and clearing obstructions without relying on guesswork.

Chemical drain cleaners are readily available, but that doesn't mean they're the best solution for every blocked drain. They may have some effect on certain small accumulations of organic material, but they're unlikely to resolve problems caused by objects, tree roots, damaged pipework or substantial obstructions further along the drainage system.

There is also another practical issue. If chemical cleaner doesn't remove the blockage, you can be left with standing water containing potentially hazardous chemicals. That makes subsequent work on the drain more difficult and potentially dangerous. For that reason, we'd avoid repeatedly pouring different chemical products into a drain that isn't clearing.

Should You Use Chemical Drain Cleaners?

What If the Outside Drain Is Blocked?

What If the Drain Keeps Blocking?

If you've cleared what appears to be a blockage only for the same problem to return, there may be an underlying reason.

Repeatedly clearing the immediate obstruction doesn't necessarily fix any of those problems. A CCTV drain survey allows the inside of the drainage system to be inspected so the actual cause can be identified.

An outside drain that's full of standing water, mud, leaves or sewage needs slightly different consideration. First establish whether debris immediately around the drain is responsible. If removing obvious material doesn't allow the water level to fall, the obstruction may be inside the drainage pipe itself.

Don't repeatedly flush toilets or run taps to 'test' a completely blocked outside drain. If wastewater has nowhere to go, you're simply adding more water to the system.

          When Is Drain Jetting Needed?

Some blockages are too substantial to remove using basic household methods. Professional high-pressure water jetting can be used to break down and remove accumulated material from drainage pipes.

Rather than simply creating a small opening through the obstruction, jetting can help remove deposits from within the pipe and restore water flow. It can be particularly useful where grease, sludge and other accumulated material are contributing to the problem.

A collapsed or seriously damaged drain can sometimes produce symptoms similar to an ordinary blockage.

Ground movement or subsidence around drainage routes

Drainage problems that cannot be permanently resolved by cleaning

These symptoms don't automatically mean you've got a collapsed drain, but persistent problems warrant further investigation. A CCTV inspection can help identify cracks, displaced joints, root intrusion and collapsed sections without immediately excavating the drainage system.

Who Is Responsible for a Blocked Drain?

Responsibility depends on where the blockage is located and how the drainage system is shared. A blockage within drainage pipework serving only your property will often be the property owner's responsibility. Once drainage becomes shared or forms part of the public sewer network, responsibility can be different.

Who Is Responsible for a Blocked Drain?

Find out who may be responsible for clearing a blocked drain, including private drains, shared sewers, rented properties and public sewers.

When a drain becomes blocked, working out who needs to deal with it isn't always obvious. Responsibility can depend on where the blockage is located, whether the pipe serves only your property or several properties, and whether it forms part of the public sewer network. Understanding who is responsible can help ensure the blockage is dealt with quickly and correctly.

The first step is therefore establishing where the blockage is and which part of the drainage system it affects.

Who Is Responsible for Clearing a Blocked Drain?

Generally, a homeowner is responsible for private drainage serving their own property before it connects to shared or public infrastructure. That means if the blockage is within pipework serving only your home, arranging and paying for clearance will usually fall to you.

However, drainage layouts vary considerably, particularly between older and newer properties, so don't assume that the nearest visible drain necessarily identifies who owns the affected pipe.

Are Homeowners Responsible for Blocked Drains?

What Is the Difference Between a Drain and a Sewer?

A private drain generally carries wastewater from a single property. A sewer typically carries wastewater from more than one property. This distinction becomes important because responsibility can change once your private drainage connects with shared infrastructure.

          What About Shared Drains?

If the affected pipe serves several properties, responsibility may lie with the relevant sewerage company rather than an individual homeowner.

If your neighbours are experiencing similar drainage problems at the same time, that can be an indication that the problem lies within shared infrastructure. It doesn't prove it, though. Establishing the location of the obstruction is still important.

Who Is Responsible for a Blocked Public Sewer?

Public sewers are generally the responsibility of the relevant water and sewerage company. If the blockage is confirmed to be within the public sewer network, it should normally be reported to that company rather than treated as a private drainage repair.

Who Is Responsible for Blocked Drains in a Rented Property?

This can depend on why the drain became blocked as well as the tenancy arrangements.

A landlord may be responsible where the problem results from the condition, installation or maintenance of the property's drainage system. However, if a blockage has been caused by inappropriate items being put down a drain or toilet, responsibility for the resulting costs can potentially be different.

Tenants should report significant drainage problems to their landlord or managing agent rather than commissioning major repair work without authorisation.

How Do You Find Out Where the Blockage Is?

Sometimes the symptoms provide clues. If only one sink is affected, the obstruction may be local to that fixture. If every toilet and drain within the property is affected, the problem could be further along the system. If several neighbouring properties are experiencing problems, shared infrastructure becomes more likely.

Where the cause or location isn't obvious, professional drainage investigation can establish what's happening.

Can a CCTV Drain Survey Identify the Problem?

Yes. A CCTV drain survey can inspect inside accessible drainage pipes to identify blockages and defects and help establish where a problem is located.

This is particularly useful where blockages repeatedly return or there is uncertainty about the condition of the drainage system.

Why Does My Drain Smell Like Sewage?

Drain smells like sewage? Discover common causes of foul drain smells, what you can check yourself and when the problem needs investigation.

A sewage smell coming from a sink, shower, bathroom or outside drain isn't something you should simply cover up with air freshener.

Drainage systems are designed to carry wastewater and unpleasant gases away from your home. If you're suddenly noticing a persistent foul or sewage-like smell, something may not be working as intended.

Sometimes the cause is relatively simple, such as material accumulating inside a waste pipe. In other cases, persistent drain smells can indicate a blockage or a problem within the drainage system.

What Causes a Sewage Smell From Your Drains?

Drain smells can develop when waste material accumulates and begins decomposing, when water isn't flowing properly or when gases from the drainage system are able to enter areas where they normally shouldn't.

The location and timing of the smell can provide useful clues.

Common Causes of Sewage Smells From Drains?

There isn't one single cause of blocked drains. What is causing the obstruction often determines how it needs to be removed.

          A Build-Up of Waste

Food, grease, hair, soap and other organic material can collect inside waste pipes. Bacteria breaking this material down can produce unpleasant smells even before the pipe becomes completely blocked.

A drain doesn't need to be completely blocked to cause problems. Partial obstructions slow wastewater down and allow material to remain inside the pipe for longer. You may notice the smell alongside slow drainage or gurgling noises.

Plumbing traps normally contain water, which creates a barrier between the room and the drainage system. If a sink, shower or other fixture hasn't been used for a considerable period, the water can evaporate and allow unpleasant drain gases into the room.

Leaves, mud, grease and wastewater can accumulate within an outside drain and produce strong odours. If the outside drain is also full of standing water, it may be blocked. See our guide to How to Unblock an Outside Drain.

Cracks, defective joints and other drainage defects can potentially allow wastewater or unpleasant gases to escape. Persistent smells that cannot be traced to an obvious fixture may therefore require further investigation.

A damaged or worn toilet seal can allow unpleasant sewage smells to escape into the bathroom. If the smell is strongest around the base of the toilet, or you notice dampness or leakage, the seal may need to be inspected and replaced.

Why Does My Sink Drain Smell Like Sewage?

Kitchen sinks commonly develop smells because food waste and grease accumulate inside the waste system. Bathroom sinks can accumulate soap, toothpaste, hair and other material.

If the sink also drains slowly, there may be a developing obstruction. Cleaning accessible components can sometimes resolve a local issue. Persistent smells despite cleaning can indicate that the cause lies further into the system.

Why Does My Shower Drain Smell?

Hair, soap residue and organic material regularly enter shower drains. Over time this can form a layer inside the waste pipe that traps further material and produces an unpleasant smell.

Remove accessible hair and debris and check whether water drains normally. If the shower is both smelling and draining slowly, a blockage may be developing.

Why Does My Outside Drain Smell Like Sewage?

An outside drain will naturally carry wastewater, but a strong persistent sewage smell deserves attention. Check for:

           Gurgling

Problems affecting toilets or sinks inside

If sewage is standing inside or escaping from the drain, the drainage system may be blocked.

Can a Blocked Drain Cause a Sewage Smell?

Yes. A blockage can prevent wastewater from moving normally and allow organic material to remain within the drainage system.

Partial blockages can be particularly deceptive because water may still escape, just much more slowly. If you're also experiencing slow drainage, gurgling or water backing up, investigate the possibility of a blockage.

Outside drain blocked? Learn how to identify the cause, safely clear simple blockages and recognise when professional help is needed.

A blocked outside drain can quickly become more than an inconvenience. Standing wastewater, unpleasant smells, overflowing gullies or sewage appearing around a drain are all signs that water isn't moving through the drainage system properly.

Some outside drain blockages are caused by leaves, mud or debris close to the surface and may be relatively straightforward to remove. Others are located deeper underground and can require professional drain jetting or investigation.

This guide explains what you can safely check yourself, how to unblock a simple outside drain and when it's better to call a drainage specialist.

How to Clear a Blocked Outside Drain Safely

The most obvious sign is water remaining inside or overflowing from the drain. You may also notice:

Water draining much more slowly than normal

Wastewater rising when a toilet is flushed

           Gurgling from nearby drains

Toilet or sink problems elsewhere in the property

Sewage appearing around an outside gully

If several fixtures are affected simultaneously, the blockage may be deeper within the drainage system rather than immediately beneath the outside drain.

Heavy rainfall, gardening and surface-water runoff can carry soil into outside drains. Small quantities may wash through, but repeated accumulation can eventually restrict the pipe.

Kitchen wastewater can carry grease into the drainage system. As it cools, grease can solidify inside pipes and collect additional waste.

Items flushed down toilets can travel further into the drainage system before becoming lodged. Wet wipes are particularly problematic because they don't break down in the same way as toilet paper.

Roots can enter through cracks or defective pipe joints and continue growing inside the drainage system. A blockage caused by roots is unlikely to be permanently resolved using ordinary DIY methods.

Cracked, displaced or collapsed pipes can restrict wastewater and trap material. Recurring outside drain blockages can therefore indicate a structural problem rather than simply too much waste.

How to Unblock an Outside Drain Yourself

          1. Put on Protective Equipment

Drain water can contain harmful bacteria. Wear waterproof gloves and suitable clothing and avoid direct contact with wastewater. Wash thoroughly afterwards.

          2. Remove the Drain Cover

If it can be safely removed, lift the drain cover to inspect the chamber below. Never enter a manhole or enclosed drainage chamber.

          3. Remove Visible Debris

If leaves, mud or other material are sitting immediately inside the drain, carefully remove what you can reach safely. You may find that water begins flowing again as soon as the surface obstruction is removed.

          4. Check the Water Level

If the chamber remains full after accessible debris has been removed, the blockage is probably further along the pipe. Avoid continually running taps or flushing toilets simply to test it. If the system is blocked, you're adding more wastewater with nowhere to go.

          5. Consider Drain Rods

Drain rods can sometimes clear straightforward obstructions. However, they should never require excessive force. Incorrect use can potentially damage pipework or result in rods becoming stuck or disconnected. If you're uncertain about the drainage layout or the obstruction won't move, stop.

It depends entirely on what's causing the blockage. Hot water may help with relatively minor grease deposits, but it won't remove mud, roots, solid objects or damaged pipework.

If the drain is already full, adding litres of hot water simply increases the amount of standing water. For a substantial outside drain blockage, identifying and physically removing the obstruction is far more important than repeatedly pouring products into the drain.

If the same drain repeatedly blocks, simply clearing it again may not solve the real problem.

This is where a CCTV drain survey can be particularly useful. A drainage camera allows the inside of the pipe to be inspected and the cause identified rather than repeatedly treating the symptom.

This should be treated more seriously. Stop unnecessary water use inside the property, particularly washing machines, dishwashers, baths and repeated toilet flushing.

The sewage indicates wastewater isn't escaping normally. Avoid contact with contaminated water and keep children and pets away from the affected area. Professional drainage assistance is advisable, particularly if the drain continues overflowing.
